This was the case with my system, too--and it would not display the various category lists properly, either. The search field seemed to work, but it was not possible to browse available packages.
While I did not care much for Adept because it cut down on the information displayed, this is even worse--at least so far. My workaround was to download Synaptic with all its dependencies so at least I have a working package manager.
