Public bug reported:

I've just upgraded my machine to Jaunty (from Hardy) and have started
experiencing X crashes. It's hard to describe exactly what the problem
is, as it appears to be random. As an example, I might simply hit
ctrl-D inside a terminal window to close it, and X might or might not
crash. When it does, KDM restarts it and logs me back in. The only
'visible' applications running last time were Firefox and Kmail, along
with all the little system daemons/utilities that go along with KDE.

I am using a customized kernel (2.6.28.5) with the official nVidia
driver (180.29) from their site, on a dual-screen Xinerama setup driven
by a single GeForce 6800. I tried re-compiling and re-installing both
kernel and driver, but that was no help (my TV capture card requires the
v4l-dvb repository, hence the need for the customized kernel and
official nVidia package).

I am using the KDE3-remix of Jaunty via packages fetched by apt-get,
from the http://apt.pearsoncomputing.net/ repository, but I am not sure
which version of X I am using... Maybe this is relevant:
