If you are comfortable doing a command line install, I just did a clean install using the alternate download .iso and didn't crash at all. It isn't quite as pretty as installing with the gui, but all the information is the exact same. www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors#alternate This is the link to download the alternate text based installer.
