The same happened to me. Observations: No error messages in syslog The monitor menu says it still has signal (although black), switching with ctrl-alt-F1 etc did not work. Remote shell is possible, but not remote NX session. Obviously something with the graphical shell. Remotely monitored: in top Xorg takes 100% CPU and the process cannot be killed even with sudo. GDM restart did not help. Only reboot (the Windows solution) worked... That was a shame because I had to wait a while for running calculations.
