I can confirm this, and have found a workaround

I get a major screen corruption in either step 4 or 5 of the installer,
a ctrl-alt-backspace lets me log back in to a normal desktop without
having to do a full reboot. I found that switching to a virtual terminal
(ctrl-alt-f1 for example) and switching back to the desktop (ctrl-
alt-f7) gets me back to where I left off. I tested this about 6 times
before going on to the partitioner and completing the install.

nothing in syslog or xorg log indicates anything out of the ordinary

my video card is a GF FX5200
