disabling visual effects solves the problem.

I guess my graphical card is not as good enough as to suppport compiz,
so gnome default, metacity, is the right choice.

Anyway it seems other users still have the problem even disabling visual
effects (see link above).

Maybe installation should perform a better effort in setting the default
window manager, in my case it should have been metacity instead of
compiz. Compiz is cute, but fully functional behavior is more important.
Besides, when the user upgrades visual effects, a warning or information
message about possible problems (based on graphical card capabilities)
will increase user reliability on the system.
