Vassilis,

Found the problem.  If you make / on a primary partition, then /var and /usr 
on their own separate, primary partitions the installer crashes -- if /var 
and /usr are on the same primary partition as / then it works fine; likewise, 
if you use extended partitions it also works fine.  Not sure if this is 
really an important issue or not but figured I'd give you the details of my 
findings and let you decide.
