More information: I have tested 9.04 final live CD and I found that changing the HAL keymapping to something else than "presentation" makes the hotkey work.
I have created a custom fdi file to make HAL change the mapping of the appropriate keycode from "presentation" to "www" (/etc/hal/fdi/information/30-keymap-hp.fdi attached). After restarting HAL the hotkey started to work as supposed to: Firefox started. Is it possible that some other app than gnome-settings-daemon or gnome- power-manager is grabbing the presentation keypress event? (Because I have killed those two before testing...)
