it's quite possible the problem started when I changed the configuration from dhcp to static in the networking control panel. However I have just changed it back and it still doesn't work. I've just opened a new gnome session as a different user, but it doesn't work in that session either.
If this applet doesn't play nicely with the Networking control panel, but the Network Monitor applet does, then might it not be a good idea to be able to remove NetworkManager applet and use Network Monitor instead?
