Btw, this must have been said before in this thread but I will say it again if people missed it:
you can enable compositing in metacity (type "gconf-editor" and then go to apps/metacity/general and enable "compositing"). Then you can have your docks and everything and you are only missing a small eye-candy part of compiz.
