Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synaptic

In the hopes that more people on the development side will see/read
this:

Repositories in general are severely outdated, many programs are more than
a year old. While Canonical strives to force out updated systems on a six month
schedule, the massive amount of changes and new features is making things less
stable and more of a challenge to work with. At the same time, the software
available through Synaptic is horribly outdated, and is frustrating to users
who are looking for good new (and bug fixed) software to provide multimedia,
etc support.
It would be a much nicer operating system if software was kept nearer to
current, and available for easy installation through Synaptic, Apt, etc..... I
can appreciate the concept of pushing the overall system forward. However, when
certain packages are more than a year old, and I go to self install, I am
swamped by manually updating and installing libraries and dependencies that are
also several versions behind what's currently in use. Most always it is
possible to do, but the time and research involved with getting a program
running that's been out for a few months is a huge hassle.
Please forward on to the 'powers that be' in hopes that current software
support is much more important to a lot of users, rather than a new system (and
a new install) every six months.
