it worked for me using ~/.config/compiz/compiz-manager, but i had to create the 
file first. 
Try 
       echo "SKIP_CHECKS=yes" >> ~/.config/compiz/compiz-manager
this should reenable it.

(in case it helps - dell vostro 1400 with a GMA695 - I've had no
problems with crashes (using "accelmethod" "uxa") - about to try to
reproduce it using bug #359392 - most annoying thing for me is that all
my settings are now lost)...
