Pietro - The only symptom of this issue is the error message. If your desktop is locked up there are more serious issues. I strongly suggest you try and get into a console, (Ctrl-Alt-F5) get a copy of /var/log/dmesg and /var/log/messages and start a thread at http://ubuntuforums.org. Put your first name somewhere in the post and I'll watch for it.
