Why do the programs exit when disconnected from X? There could be some
in between but it may be difficult to implement. However, a jerky move
between screens is better than total prevention of the move. Is there
something that prevents this from being added? I'd work on writing the
code if there isn't. I'm going to change it's status to confirmed
(because you said it does happen). I don't think it's invalid just
because it's by design. Although it's importance would be wishlist.
Other OS's (windows for example) does not have this problem. Nvidia's
TwinView steps around this problem. Perhaps something like it could be
implemented?

** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu)
       Status: Invalid => Confirmed
