This corner case with partial upgrades is known, it affects every source package which builds multiple binaries. Few, if any, of them have such strict dependencies for good reason.
If we only did the symlinking on strict dependencies, we couldn't symlink pretty much any package, which would nullify the space savings which we get with it.
