The same thing has been happening to me. I have a Dell Inspiron 8000, running Kubuntu Edgy.
Everything was fine, then one day (all the problems i've ever encountered seem to happen this way).. I ran an update/upgrade, and after I restarted, I noticed my display would seemingly NEVER turn off. I usually have my display turn off after 10 minutes, but now I notice it turns off every 5 hours. I can change it back to 10, and it works right up until I restart.. then it resets to 5 hours. I don't think it's confusing minutes/seconds at all.
