There is a section regarding mail-notification here

how to setup mail-notification to work nicely with notify-osd. But you
might want to consider using "indicator-applet". It is meant to
integrate nicely with evolution, pidgin and many other apps. So for all
your communication applications you have one single indicator catering
for everything. In addition to that it all works seamlessly with notify-
osd.
