Switching between tabs doesn't cause flickering, it's the tooltips of the tabs (popping up when you hover over a tab) that are causing the flickering. Opening the context menu also flickers, as you said. Alt-Tab also causes flickering, which goes mad if you re-select firefox or evince, but don't release alt-tab.
