There are generally two types of "screensaver hang" problems. The first is triggered by 3D screensavers. This trip code in the 3d OpenGL parts of the driver that you may not be exercising in regular use esp. if you don't play 3d games or use compiz; if you have "random screensavers" set, this can often lead to this. Setting to blank, or to some other non-OpenGL screensaver is considered a workaround for this bug. To test and see if you can reproduce it, try testing OpenGL screensavers and see if they can trigger freezes.
The second is triggered by the power management settings for your hardware. This is called DPMS. Turning off any power management settings, so the screensaver never powers off the monitor, etc. is a workaround for this. Or you can test if this is the case by making the power management very aggressive (set them all to 1 min each). Full screen video players often use DPMS to disable power management, so the screensaver doesn't turn on in the middle of watching a video. Makes sense, but obviously if DPMS causes hangs on your machine, exiting the video player could lead to hangs if it switches DPMS on as it exits. That could explain why you saw this with video earlier. The reason it went away could either because that DPMS bug was fixed, or the video player just got smarter about not switching on DPMS in this circumstance. -- [i965] X freezes at least once a day after leaving screensavers or fullscreen video https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/316414 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
