I had the same issue when upgrading Intrepid -> Jaunty using the German servers:
W:Failed to fetch http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/jaunty/universe/source/Sources.bz2 Hash Sum mismatch , E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. Changing to the main servers allowed me to continue, but this isn't really a valid config change that should resolve the issue is it?
