+1, I'm not happy with this fix either. I still want on screen display for my volume keys. As a Hardy/Ibex user, I just set the (system -> preferences -> sound) Default Mixer Track to something unneeded like CD and it worked around the double-stepping issue. Does the display match the actual volume? Mostly no, but it's within a reasonable ballpark.
