Finally I got the sound working on both card0 (SB) and card(2) HDMI.

This is what "aplay -l" returned:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: HDA Generic [HDA Generic]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 2: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: ATI HDMI [ATI HDMI]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Do the following
1. asoundconf set-default-card SB ( or HDMI if using HDMI )
2. Edit the file ~/.asoundrc.asoundconf
3. Change the line third non-comment line "defaults.pcm.device 0" to
defaults.pcm.device 0 or (3 if HDMI)
4. System->preferences->Sound-> Sound tab
a). Disable the play sound effects completely
b). On the Devices tab instead of "Autodetect" select the right device SB
or HDMI.
5. Click on Volume control on the top panel to launch the volume control menu.
Again select the right device SB or HDMI.
If HDMI then check the ICxxxxx box to enable audio thro HDMI.

This should make it work. I did the same thing in 8.04 also with another
mother board with HDMI on it.
For some reason without doing the asoundconf the sound does not work with pulse
audio.

I also tried another thing. I removed pulseaudio pkg and setup my system
with alsa. This also required the asoundconf to set the right device
number.

Hope this helps
