This is possibly due to some application repeatedly probing the monitor
for information. Could you take a look at bug 339200 and bug 344554 and
see if you see similarities? Especially, does Xorg.0.log get some lines
added to it every time the screen goes black?

  I have random screen flashes in Jaunty beta, where the screen goes black
  for a split second. The bug is sort of the same as the old (and fixed)
  Bug 91404 but it seems to have resurfaced here in Jaunty. My video card
  is GMA X 3000 and my driver is xserver-xorg-video-intel.
