Indeed this does look like a duplicate of bug 69607. Is anyone sure what package is the problem here? The modular Xorg makes it damn hard to tell where the problem lies.
xserver-xorg-video-ati provides radeon_drv.so and libgl1-mesa-dri provides radeon_dri.so & r300_dri.so I found this page: http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/R300_20Portal Looks like things are "known" to work on 6.5.2, so I suppose we have to wait for that to get into (feisty?) Too bad ubuntu is technically non-functional for me, since 3D is all I do on this machine.
