guest additions doesn't properly detect jaunty's xserver, the problem is xserver for jaunty reports "1.6.0" instead of what virtualbox GA looks for which is "1.6", these instructions tell you how to extract the installer and manually modify the detection script, i'm sure virtualbox will fix this in future release. i also agree that jaunty should not crash without having GA installed.
