Thanks Harald for the update.

Currently in my system, 'top' as well as 'free' commands show 1.5GB real
memory usage, whereas 'KDE System Monitor' shows only 0.5GB usage.  !!

I am confused as to which one should be relied upon for the real memory
usage.

Could you please tell me which one can I rely upon for the memory usage? 
All these years, I have been using 'top' & 'free' in the server machines and 
thats why I thought 'System Monitor' is showing wrong values.

I still feel that the usage values should be consistent across different
tools/utilities.
