Hi, i also have this problem, but use nvidia card and drivers. After manual xserver restart or switching to a alt+fx console, gnome seems to lock up when switching back. It doesnt help when i kill everything gnome and gdm process manually, only reboot helps. But when gnome is dead, other window managers work fine, i.e. fluxbox. But when i try to load gnome terminal in fluxbox, gnome terminal is also locked up! Maybe that helps to find the bug.
