I can confirm this on ubuntu edgy (on both the nfs server and client). Launching openoffice on a NFS-mounted home directory took forever. Installing nfs-common solved this problem (and many other performance- related problems).
BUT even with nfs-common, openoffice has some remaining problems, like crash on exit and random errors while saving.
