I confirm this error too on my Intel 82852/855GM with alpha 6 and kernel 2.6.28-11-generic, same package situation reported by Andy. With this error/scenario it's impossible to use compiz (does not load at all), was working perfectly with the previously lidrm and/or intel driver packages.
