Thank you for your reply.

Both Dapper Dan And Edgy Eft have been tried along with Debian and other
distros. This is an ongoing problem based on what I have seen in the
posts to various internet forums. All Debian based distros appear to
have this problem.

It appears that the BIOS software/firmware on the Compaq actually INVERTS the
signal to the fan under certain conditions ( it turns the fan OFF when it
should turn the fan ON ). This is a bug in the ACPI software/firmware that was
written by Microsoft. Microsoft knew about this condition and the M$ Operating
systems compensate for that. That is why everything from MS-DOS to W2000pro
operates the fan correctly.
I suggest that the easiest fix would default to turning on the fan at high
speed to make the system operational and never mind the stepped fan speeds that
are used in the ACPI/APM controls.
(This is being written on an Armada 1750 running W2000pro that has been running
continuously for DAYS ) This would solve a problem that has plagued some laptop
owners for YEARS.

Thank you again for getting back to me.
