Sorry to say, for the folks who might have been hoping to find out more
about this weird bug or malfunction, but (if I remember right from then)
the fixes I tried got nowhere & I wound up cheating, reinstalling the
whole OS.  In my fumbling experience with terminal-level fixes there
always winds up being some program or function to install, try again,
then find that fix might have worked great for Fedora or Slackware but
run into some nuance in Ubuntu...  Now I'm trying to figure out why I
have two laptops, with two different versions of Kubuntu (32 & 64 bit)
with different wirelesses, both inoperative at the same time.  I think
I'll just close this lid and read a book.
