Thank you Chris for your prompt response. I have installed openoffice.org-writer version 1:3.0.1-7ubuntu1~intrepid1 from openoffice-pkgs ppa as you have suggested.
Now I can see the plain number being pasted (that is, the result of expression being copied, and not the expression itself). That is exactly what OOwriter 2.4 would do. How did you manage to make OOwriter to handle cell copy/paste the way Calc does it? I will then try to do likewise on Jaunty, as Intrepid backport did not work for me.
