Thanks, dg, that did the trick - as far as I can tell, I am back to the
original proprietary driver:

Still not sure what step to take next - by the time I had the RetailPlus
working yesterday, I'd installed all Intrepid backports and proposed in
an effort to address the Broadcom bug. At this point, I'm torn being
staying wired and stable and enabling backports and proposed to see what
effect, if any, they have on being able to use the RetailPlus.

Then again, with Tim's comment of two hours ago re Jaunty updates,
perhaps I'll upgrade again and see if that works.
