** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: update-manager

I was trying to update the packages login and passwd both to version
1:4.0.13-7ubuntu3.2.
When I click to see the changes the program crashes and takes with it the X
server (but sometimes the whole system freezes, fortunately the magic key
combination to umount the disks still works).

The description works fine with other packages (namely, libsmbclient,
  libxine-main1, xserver-xorg-core)

I tried to launch the program from console but with no luck, since X restarts
immediately.
  I also tried:
     sudo update-manager &>crash-report
  but this is not working.

I realized that using arrow keys to scroll very quickly through the
packages there's no effect. In other words, it seems that it can
download information about the packages. Instead, using the arrow keys
to select those packages and wait a bit on them has the same effect as
  clicking.

I have not upgraded with synaptic or apt-get, in the fear of not being
  able to reproduce the bug.

- I'm running Ubuntu Dapper.
+ I'm running Ubuntu Dapper. I recently upgraded to kernel 2.6.15-26-k7, Xorg
version is 1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10 (for which I have an update available) with nvidia
proprietary driver 1.0.8762+2.6.15.11-3. The system is running on an Acer
laptop with GeForce FX 5700 Go as video card.
  Cheers,
  Luca Ottaviano
