In the end I upgraded the CPU (HSF) cooling to an Arctic Freezer Pro 7. Now runs 20°C cooler on memory/cpu intensive programs.
So the factory fit fan and heatsink was sufficient for 'Blows but not, apparently, for the Hardy plus incarnations of Ubuntu. Still, not too expensive.
