Public bug reported:

I recently bought a StarTech.com branded USB sound card
(http://www.startech.com/item/ICUSBAUDIO-USB-20-to-Audio-Adapter.aspx).
As far as I can tell this is has a C-Media CM108 chipset. It works fine
under Windows, though a little loud. In Ubuntu Intrepid the volume is
ear-splitting, and the normal GNOME volume control has no effect at all;
the only control in gnome-alsamixer that has any effect is the one
specifically associated with the device ("USB Mixer" - incidentally
there are two tabs for it, one showing only the microphone, the other
showing both mic and speaker). To get a sensible volume control I have
to plug my earphones into my external speakers and use the speakers'
physical volume control.
