It does seem to have been rectified in subsequent releases, at least it
is no longer happening, so the action can be closed.

Status in “gnome-power-manager” source package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

Bug description:
The latest 8.10 release is very quick to report battery/charge 
connect/disconnect. Simply moving the laptop is sufficient to trigger a series 
of beeps and warning messages that the laptop has reverted to battery and back 
to charging. This didn't happen on the last release.
