Did a bit more testing with the 6.11.0 drivers. It turned out that the
bug was triggered by the following lines in my xorg.conf (which I added
at some point when the radeon drivers just became useful for 3d).

Section "Device"
   Identifier  "Configured Video Device"
   Driver      "ati"
   Option       "AccelMethod" "EXA"
   Option      "GARTSize" "64"
EndSection

Removing the two options makes the screen corruption go away (at least
with 6.11.0, haven't tried to go back).
