Hi Daniel

Good of you to try to help. I'm very much a newcomer to Ubuntu however and I
have failed to make any difference using 'pavucontrol'. Following my initial
bug report I trawled the web for solutions and tried to implement several
suggestions, none of which solved the problem.

I eventually uninstalled and reinstalled pcm and that did make a difference,
but I am not content with the result:-

The drumroll at login comes from the speakers.
The welcome sound at the desktop load comes from the headset.
Music that I play on Rythmbox comes from the speakers.
Sound from the web (for example YouTube) comes from the headset.

Is there any way I can alter the settings so that the sound comes from wherever
I want it to?

Your help would be appreciated.

Regards
Murdo

@Murdo Use pavucontrol to set the default sink back to the desired one.

@Victoria Not likely to be a PulseAudio issue but an ALSA mixer one; try
`sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils reset'

Status in “pulseaudio” source package in Ubuntu: New

Bug description:
Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I'm using a Dell Dimension 5150 desktop PC with Dell external speakers and
a Logitech headset with mircrophone. I recently installed Ubuntu 8.10 and
I'm gradually finding my way around this OS. Today my external speakers
stopped working and regardless of the preferences I choose, all the sound comes
from my headset.

This is the list of hardware devices that I obtained:-

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: Headset [Logitech USB Headset], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Any help would be appreciated.
