Tests with FreeBSD 6.2 showed that the version over there works
correctly and doesn't throw any errors:

Executing backslash '\' test 'sed ... | iconv ... | hexdump -x -s 2'...
   :) stable

Executing backslash '\' test 'od'...
   :) stable
