I just checked again and the debs were there.  I downloaded and
installed the debs.  I added "ati" to xorg.conf.  I rebooted again to
black screen.  This time, it would not boot to an interface without
vesa.

I think I got the install correct.  It looks like the commit ID is in
the file.

I attached the Xorg.0.log.old.

So, in layman's terms, what's the story on this issue?  Do you think you
are near the solution, or is this just a tough situation?
