It would appear as though this issue was related to my hardware video card...at least for 8.10 and 9.04 alpha 5. Both would go through the whole installation process, but choke on boot. But when I removed the card, both booted after installation to the cmd prompt. I'd like to note that I was able to upgrade to 8.10 through 8.04 without an issue, it was only a fresh install. I'll try the alpha 5 desktop live cd both with and without the card this weekend if not sooner.
