As you get no video output this is likely video driver related. Does moving to VT-1 and back to VT-7 (or whever X is) help; ctr-alt-f1 then ctr-alt-f7 to test this. Can you tell if the backlight is lit? If you are able to get to VT-1 it is worth logging in and finding out what the X server (Xorg process) is doing. Attaching an strace may help here. Also which version of the nvidia drivers are you using currently.
