@Xavier this sounds interesting with reloading the modules - would it help to explicitely configure imps2 in xorg.conf as well. I am on the road this weekend, but will check back tomorrow.
@Anthex also sounds interesting - will try the recovery console. The problem does not have anything to do with kde-wm or gnome-wm - did a complete reinstall and took ubuntu-desktop instead of kubuntu-desktop to see if it made any difference. As there is none, I really think it is startup scripts, xorg, hal-infor or the kernel...
