First, could you please try this on Jaunty? This should be fixed. For Hardy, though, I have some bad news. SMP in kvm-62 is simple immature, and known to be buggy. Basically, all IO was handled in the main CPU thread, which involved some fundamental race conditions. It could block reading a file descriptor, and that simple action of hitting a key is what unblocked it.
Talking with upstream, it's just not possible to port this back to hardy. KVM smp guest support just isn't going to happen. Really, it was the upper 70's releases of KVM where smp support really started looking better.
