I have got the same problem. The strange thing is, that it started occuring
right after I switched from the 'fglrx' to 'radeon' video drivers.
For me, this seems quite unrelated, but someone with greater knowledge might
know the reason for this.

I tried to change the keyboard shortcuts in the gnome-control-center,
but everytime I want to set the key for 'mute', it enters
XF86ScreenSaver, and for 'lower volume' it tries to enter
XF86AudioLowerVolume _and_ XF86AudioStop...

So then I tried to see, what 'showkey' tells me. I switched to a virtual
console <alt><f2> and logged in while some music was playing in Banshee.
Here, every key worked perfectly! Mute muted the music, 'lower volume' lowered
the volume and neither keys had side effects. 'showkey' gave me the following
output for pressing each key once:
## Mute Key:
keycode 113 press
keycode 113 release
keycode 115 press
keycode 115 release
keycode 113 press
keycode 113 release
## Lower Volume:
keycode 114 press
keycode 114 release
keycode 114 press
keycode 114 release
## Higher Volume:
keycode 115 press
keycode 115 release
keycode 115 press
keycode 115 release

Perhaps the above is all nonsense, I just wanted to help as much as I could.
