Let's try installing MP3 support manually then, since it's not working
through Amarok.

First enable universe and multiverse repositories with directions from
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Kubuntu  Then install the
mp3 packages from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

They are:
libxine-extracodecs
libarts1-mpeglib
libarts1-xine
libakode2-mpeg

I think libxine-extracodecs is the specific package responsible for mp3,
but it doesn't really hurt to install the others too.  If you have any
trouble, let me know and take a look towards the last comments of bug
61972
