Ok, I think I managed to fix it.

What I did I go into the synaptic package manager, and delete the
package linux-image-2.6.27-11-generic. It was labeled as installed (?).
I removed it along with everything dependent on it, and ran the
following commands in a shell:

apt-get clean
aptitude update
aptitude install linux-image-2.6.27-11-generic

(last line is a bit different since the package was no longer installed,
it had to be installed and not re-installed).

It worked as intended and I no longer have the problem.
