blank out the "invisible" areas from the rectangular root window.

- Get rid of deprecated libart calls.
- Get rid of deprecated GTK_CHECK_* macros.
System Log Viewer
- Explicitely depend on GThreads.
- Gather all the readable log files from /var/log and /etc/syslog.conf
instead of hardcoding obsolete values. (lp: #318689)
