As of yesterday, I replaced my 7950GT with a 9800GTX. I first tried
booting up without any change to xorg.conf but that didn't work... After
several tries I went back to the 177 drivers and finally got X to work
again.

When I did some investigation, I came across the same error as above. This was
easily fixed by adding the line
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
in xorg.conf, but it didn't solve the rest of the problem.

What I mean: X still does not start up, but goes a little further then before.
I can see some scrambled blocks on my screen when it tries to start up X, and
then it stops my system without any error whatsoever
I cannot log in through ssh anymore from an other machine, which points me in
the direction of a kernel panic like situation.

Any suggestions on how to proceed from here???

kernel: 2.6.27-12-generic (also tried under 2.6.27-11-generic and
